Born in Austria, Peter D. Lederer left Vienna with his family in1938 when the Nazis came to power. His journey to the U.S.–via Heiden, Zurich, Paris, and New York–would go on to deeply influence his worldview. Peter received his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School, and was one of the early partners at Baker & McKenzie, working in its New York, Chicago and Zurich offices for over forty years until 1994. He then moved on to consulting for major global enterprises, creating an internet startup, and then returned to an academic setting where he had a profound impact on legal education.

As an adjunct professor at the University of Miami Law School, Peter was a co-creator of LawWithoutWalls and Passport to Practice, a program to help lawyers and law students develop technology, management, and other 21st century skills. In particular, Peter was passionate about equity in legal education, feeling strongly about extending educational and practical opportunity to aspiring and practicing lawyers from far flung corners of the globe, with a special emphasis on reaching students from law programs in Asia and Africa.

The Peter D. Lederer LawWithoutWalls Scholarship in 2024 is supported by Bowmans Law in South Africa and provides opportunities for talented law students from the University of Witwatersrand to participate in LWOW Sprint 2024 in Madrid.

James Peters is the Head of Legal Innovation at LegalZoom where he develops new legal service delivery models aimed at achieving LegalZoom’s long-term strategic objectives.

James received a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and an M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. James is a member of the State Bar of California and is a solicitor in England and Wales.

As the first one in his family to attend law school, James’ intent in establishing this scholarship is to make opportunities more accessible for students who demonstrate the ability to succeed in the study of law but as first generation law students, may not otherwise have the access to the resources, network and connections that can help facilitate their transition to a legal career—an opportunity that LawWithoutWalls provides.

The James Peters First Generation Initiative Student Scholarship will guarantee funding to participate in LWOW 2024 to an eligible student who is a first generation college student (generally defined as someone whose parents/guardians have not completed a Bachelor’s degree) and who is, within their family, a first generation student currently enrolled in a law program (LLB, LLM or JD).

Eligible students without school funding will be automatically considered for the scholarship upon application to LawWithoutWalls.
