This 3-day workshop introduces participants
to law firm management theories and techniques
for success in a management role.
INTRODUCTION
The LWOW Rapid Workshop: Moving into Law Firm Management is a new approach to executive education that draws upon the successful format and feel of LawWithoutWalls to equip future law firm leaders with techniques that encourage effective teaming, foster collaboration, and develop a culture of innovation and success. Senior associates on partner track will learn practical, implementable ways to enhance efficiency, innovation, communication, and culture creation both within their firms and with external clients.
In the dynamic global legal market, lawyers are being asked to think outside their mandate. Today, lawyers find themselves challenged by multiple constituencies: clients, competitors, alternative legal providers, even their own firms. A constant refrain in these challenges is the need for outside counsel to adopt a more business-related and commercial-focused approach to the services they provide to clients.
Unfortunately, few lawyers are properly trained to implement this approach, especially if they have ben practicing for a number of years. The traditional academic and professional experience for lawyers, including in-firm training and CLE, generally focuses on legal subject matter expertise and the furthering of technical skills as a legal advisor. Consequently, outside counsel may not always optimize outcomes and resources for either themselves or for their clients. Here, the concept of an executive management training program based on the business perspective kicks in—one that is especially designed for lawyers and focuses on the most important aspects of a professionally led and managed law firm.
The LWOW Rapid Workshop is designed for early-stage law firm partners and lawyers being groomed for management responsibility that are interested in learning how to transfer a business view to the law firm.
OBJECTIVES
The LWOW Rapid Workshop: Moving into Law Firm Management will focus on theories and techniques critical to senior associates' success as new partners. These theories and techniques include:
law firm management
law firm theory
inter-generational/360 degree communication
teaming, collaboration, and culture creation
motivating and developing associates
The LWOW Rapid Workshop focuses on the most important aspects of professionally managing a law firm. Unlike other U.S. programs, the LWOW Rapid Workshop is based on the European model of teaching and, therefore, is an excellent complement to other intensive executive education programs on leadership and management. Leveraging the tried and true success of the Executive School of the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland (ES-HSG) Law & Management program and a selected pool of experts and academics, the LWOW Rapid Workshop will focus on six critical issues facing law firm management:
Law Firm Strategy: How do we turn the trends in our market to success in running our firms and long-term profitable growth? Where do we want to stand in 5 years from now, and how to stand out among the competition?
Law Firm Business Model Design: From strategy to action, how do we master change to successfully implement a new business model that aligns our strategy, organization, culture, and professionals for long term success?
Client Orientation: What do clients expect from us, how do they want us to team with them, and how can exceed those expectations in an era of “more for less”? How can we drive business development in collaboration with our clients?
Leadership: How do we recruit the right professionals and motivate and develop them effectively? How do we motivate and leverage the Generation Y that is knocking at the door to the partners' lounge? How do we cultivate and communicate a culture and lead change?
Risk Management: In adding value to our corporate services for demanding clients, how can we help them identify assess, analyze, and control risks above and beyond legal risks; e.g., Cyber security and quality risk management? How is the digital revolution influencing external counsel’s risks in consulting ever more demanding clients?
Accounting and Finance: The Golden Formula to financial success includes managing accounting and billing, identifying the value drivers in your firm, leveraging metrics and pricing, and data-driven evaluation to prepare for mergers and acquisitions, spin offs, and growth.
